Whatnot fees vs eBay fees for card sellers

On the same $100 card sale, at the schedules published as of this writing, the fees are $11.61 on Whatnot, $10.47 on eBay Live and $15.54 on a classic eBay listing. So are Whatnot fees cheaper than eBay's? On this sale, cheaper than a classic listing, slightly more than eBay Live, and the structures differ more than the totals do. Whatnot's figures below are its schedule as updated 12 August 2026; both eBay schedules were captured from eBay's own fee pages on 31 August 2026, and all three are US schedules that vary by country and change over time.

Whatnot charges commission, 8% for cards, on the item's post-coupon price alone, and payment processing, 2.9% plus $0.30, on everything the buyer paid; the full schedule is in Whatnot fees explained. A classic eBay listing charges one final value fee, 13.25% for trading cards with processing included, on the total amount of the sale, which includes the buyer's shipping and sales tax, plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order, the higher rate above $10. eBay Live, the live-selling side, presents its fee split as commission plus processing "to simplify comparison with other live selling platforms", as eBay puts it: 6% commission capped at $100 per item plus 2.9% and $0.30, all of it charged on the full buyer total.

That base difference is the point most comparisons miss: only Whatnot's commission stops at the item price. Both eBay stacks bill their full percentage on the shipping and tax your buyer paid, money that was never yours; on Whatnot only the 2.9% processing shares that base.

Take the same sale our fees guide follows: a $100 card, $6 buyer shipping, $8.25 tax, so a $114.25 order total. Whatnot: 8% of $100 is $8.00, processing 2.9% of $114.25 plus $0.30 is $3.61, together $11.61. eBay Live: 8.9% of $114.25 plus $0.30 is $10.47. A classic eBay listing: 13.25% of $114.25 plus the $0.40 per-order fee is $15.54. Same card, same buyer, three different fee lines.

Run the sports-cards guide's 30-spot break, $40 spots with $47.60 order totals, through all three: Whatnot takes $146.41 in fees, eBay Live about $136.09, and classic listings about $201.21, though that last column is hypothetical: eBay treats every case break purchase as an eBay Live transaction even outside an event. Per-order fees add up fast at break volume, and eBay Live currently runs a small-order promotion, a $0.10 per-order fee on orders of $10 or less through 31 December 2026. The caps diverge at the high end. On a $3,000 single, Whatnot's commission stops at the first $1,500 for card singles, a promotion its terms can end at any time, so $120; eBay Live's commission caps at $100 per item, reached at $1,667, with the 2.9% processing running uncapped on the total; a classic listing's 13.25% runs on the first $7,500, calculated per item, so $397.50 on the item price alone, with processing already inside that number. Listing fees exist only on the classic side: 250 free listings a month, then $0.35 per listing, per category and per relist. Neither Whatnot nor eBay Live charges listing fees today.

Fees are one input. What a card actually realises differs by platform, audience and hour, sell-through differs, and both platforms run promotions that move the numbers, so treat every figure above as a dated snapshot and check both fee pages before betting a strategy on the difference.
